Shaptor Bench is inspired by the contrasting rounded boulders nestled into the ancient woodland up behind our house in Bovey Tracey. The contrasting charred ash elements sit firmly into the main structure just like the
boulders do.
The bench also highlights the impact of ash dieback and how climate change is accelerating the effects of diseases and insect attacks on our island’s woodlands. The bench celebrates the importance of using some of this felled timber to make durable, heirloom furniture to ensure it continues to not be forgotten.
It is a durable statement piece for living with and really using. The ash is local from the Dartington estate and Teign valley woodlands. The black elements are local ash and have been charred. This creates contrast and adds a tactile finish. All finished with Osmo raw and clear hardwax oil.
Designed for indoor use.
